HSK 2 Study Guide
300 words · 150 characters · ~200 hours total study. HSK 2 doubles your vocabulary from HSK 1 and starts to feel like real Chinese. You can hold simple daily conversations: shopping, weather, asking directions, ordering food, and talking about your day.
What HSK 2 Adds
If HSK 1 was the alphabet, HSK 2 is the first sentences you can actually use. New territory:
- Shopping and money — 买 (buy), 卖 (sell), 多少钱 (how much), 便宜 (cheap), 贵 (expensive).
- Weather and seasons — 天气 (weather), 下雨 (raining), 热 (hot), 冷 (cold).
- Transportation — 火车 (train), 飞机 (airplane), 出租车 (taxi), 走 (walk), 坐 (sit/take a vehicle).
- Food and dining — 饰馆 (restaurant), 菜 (dish), 米饭 (rice), ordering at a restaurant.
- Time expressions — 昨天 (yesterday), 今天 (today), 明天 (tomorrow), 现在 (now), 以后 (later).
- Adjectives — 好 (good), 大 (big), 小 (small), 新 (new), 旧 (old), 高兴 (happy).
Key Grammar at HSK 2
- The particle 了 for completed actions — properly introduced. 我吃了饭 (I ate).
- Comparison with 比 — 他比我高 (he is taller than me).
- Future and modals — 要 (will/want to), 会 (will/can), 可以 (can/may).
- Duration — expressing how long something takes.
- Reduplication — 看看 (take a look), 试试 (give it a try).
- Yes-no with verb-not-verb — 你去不去? (Are you going?).
Common Stumbling Blocks
- The particle 了 is confusing. It does NOT simply mean "past tense" — it marks completion or a change of state. Don't try to memorize a rule; learn it through example sentences and lots of exposure.
- Tone changes (tone sandhi). Two third tones in a row → the first becomes second tone. 你好 is actually pronounced "ní hǎo", not "nǐ hǎo."
- Measure words multiply. HSK 2 introduces 只 (animals), 本 (books), 杯 (cups), 件 (clothes). Learn each new noun WITH its measure word.
The Exam
HSK 2 has Listening (~25 minutes) and Reading (~22 minutes) sections, similar to HSK 1 but longer. Pinyin still appears alongside characters. Total questions: ~60. Passing score: 120/200. Most learners who finish a structured HSK 2 course pass on their first attempt.
Study Tips
- Start listening practice early. HSK 2 exam audio is faster than you expect. Listen to graded podcasts and dialogues every day.
- Don't neglect characters. Even though pinyin appears on the exam, learning the 150 characters now makes HSK 3 dramatically easier.
- Speak out loud. Read every example sentence aloud. The motor memory matters as much as the visual memory.
